Don't be scared, but the latest thing is votive holders that have a critter on top of a hollow log. So cool that I'm glad my sister put me in the frame of mind to make something that can be useful. The flameless votive gives a spooky aura to a display and here are my latest ones that will soon go to eBay.

Big trouble here in the Hollow

Big trouble can come in small packages and we have been trying to figure out what is behind the disappearing items like spoons and socks, candy and chips. Who is lighting the candles, what is the cause of the general mayhem around here. We tried leaving cupcakes out with a bowl of milk, but still the mischievous mayhem continued. We found the answer to one mystery, the candles light themselves everyday at the same time which is a delight. The biggest excitement came when we found the culprit to many of the crimes,...meet Blinkitty a pesky sprite that was found red handed trying to cut off the wings of a sweet little fairy!. We trapped him in a cage, and there he sits looking so innocent. He is not. He pushed little Minnikin into the mud and was attacking her wings with nail clippers. Minnikin is fine now, although a bit traumatised. Blinkitty is better off in a cage for now. They both will visit ebay today. I have vowed to get more little ones in my Etsy shop and I'm about to lunch my latest additions. I've been off for a bit working on finishing techniques and testing new materials.

Amazing Hummingbird

About 20 miles outside of Hob Knobby Hollow is an amazing sight. A calliope hummingbird is still visiting long after departure time has come and gone. Our weather is quite wintry and we have had very cold temperatures. There are no blooming flowers for the little bird to get nectar from. No one has ever seen the calliope hummingbird in Indiana before so it is a first and truly amazing story. And a true story to this point :). Here at the Hollow, we can understand how the bird survives. She was adopted by a human family with a nectar feeder, but also is cared for by this little flower fairy. She has a magical garden that blooms even in winter and she shares her flowers with anyone who wants them. She will go to eBay today along with her hummer.

Here is a picture of my guide with a pack on his back, all eager to be off. It didn't take us long to discover a Dinsele which is a vampire fairy originally from Romania. They appear as large cats that walk on their hind legs and wear clothes. This one is Torine and his teeth are showing. We didn't visit long because Dinselles like to wait on the edge of crossroads and suck blood from any humans that wander too close. We kept to the middle of the road and moved on along. If you should see one of these bizarre creatures, you can offer milk and bread, white bread is best. Here is a goblin that is dressed for the cold, except that his shoes have holes in them! He wears a key that shows us he has old world wisdom and is able to travel into the mystic realm that most Nobbins never see and humans can only wonder about.

This is a picture of my guide for the week. I like to make a Nobbin elf that has a pack each week. I am showing this picture of the legs made of Super Sculpey. I like to experiment and I haven't used this clay in a long time. Now I know why. You can see that the legs which have been baked for the second time, have turned very dark. Super Sculpey doesn't allow me to do the multi- baking method that I use. The other parts of the sculpt are done in Original Prosculpt. That is sold on ebay by Jack Johnson, a doll artist himself. I will not use any other type of flesh clay because his is the best by far. It models nicely, and never gives me problems. The shoes (and later the clothes) are made of Sculpey Ultralight. It is a great clay that does not need conditioning beyond some easy squeezes. It also paints like a dream. You may want to give it a try. These are a couple of characters coming soon.

Sad News from the Hollow

I hope everyone is enjoying the Holidays! I had a few days off and then it was back to work..er.. play. I must first start off on a sad note. Here is the headline in my local paper. Versailles State park is next to the Hollow and my home (my big back yard). A dog was on a leash and was killed by a hidden raccoon trap that the park people had placed in the gully. I have taken my pictures in those gullies and my dog explores them all the time. We never had a clue there were traps in some of them. Her dog was probably a troll-sniffing dog like mine and they are especially attracted to those places because that is how Nobbins safely cross the street. I know fox, beaver, opossums and other wonderful wildlife are living there and we are grieved to think of traps. I won't go on as I have many new things to show you this week that I hope to start listing on eBay tonight and tomorrow.

We had a happy little guide walking with us today. He had a pack and walking stick. We sang this song as we walked along today..to the tune of "if your happy and you know it clap your hands" It's a troll It's a goblin It's an elf. It's the little bitty fairy on your shelf. If they seem so alive, It's because they still survive, It's a troll, It's a goblin, It's an elf. Here a picture of our guide today. And then we found Knop. A what, you say? A knop. A most unusual creature that you may have never seen before. Knops are a type of hobgoblin that originated in England and have descended from horses. They are have horse characteristics which can include horse faces and hooves. This little knop is very young. He has horse hooves and horse face with a mane. Amazing what you can find around here. They are going to ebay and I will miss him and our cheerful guide.

You can't miss the Pileated woodpecker because they are so large and have a loud call as they fly through the woods. They, and other peckers are an important part of the Hob Knobby Hollow ecosystem. Woodpeckers eat bugs out of decaying trees. They leave behind Nobbin Homes and homes for other wildlife as well. Which brings me to this picture of a pileated woodpecker doing his thing with a beech tree. However, this beech tree is suffering from human scars that have ended it's life before it's time. Here is the bottom of the tree. Careless carvings that end a life of a tree early. No nobbin will live here, the magic is gone, so we move on.

Today my walk had barely begun when out popped a little green fairy! She walked straight up to me and handed me a gift. An acorn. I thought to myself, there are so many acorns around...until I took a closer look. The most beautiful acorn I ever saw was there in my hand! It is a rich mahogany brown and carefully polished without a blemish or mark. I will learn to wire wrap this nut and wear it as my good luck spirit pendant. Such are the rewards for tree loving souls, and I will cherish my gift.
Green fairies honor those who protect trees and bring a bit of bad luck to those who abuse them. She then took me to a most disturbing sight. I will show you that on another day. She is on ebay now :)

Sleih Beggey a crow elf nobbin!

As promised, we have a surprising little character with us today, in fact, two of them and a their tiny horse. They were discovered as we saw a likely tangle of undergrowth and as we approached, the crows gave warning. We knew we were close to something wonderful, and sure enough, my guide introduced us to two Sleih Beggeys! They have other names as well, but for the purpose of clarification for my field guide, we will stick to this name which means "little folk". They are descended from the ISLE OF MAN inhabitants. I found these on a riverbank which is normal. They were in a cave-like hollow and came out to say Hi! They even had a little horse with them. It was a delightful encounter. They have crow's feet and are usually naked in summer, but wear crow inspired clothing in winter. I think crows actually ride the tiny horses just for fun. These little folk are so secretive that humans have seldom seen them, and probably could not believe their eyes if they did!

Above we have the Sleih Beggys and two common flower fairies which will soon appear in my Etsy shop and on Ebay.

Coming soon we will encounter a couple of different Hobgoblins. Yes, there are many types of Hobgoblins. One called a Knop, has it's origin as a horse so will have horse-like features. The other Hobgoblin likes to live near your fireplace hearth and soak up the warm flames. You may have been bothered by them in your own home. They are tempermental Til next time! Keep your eyes peeled for the unexpected!

What to take, where to look, when to go

Many flower fairies as well a gnomes can be found in gardens in old neighborhoods where modern construction has not bothered the land for many years. They are nice to find and so are house fairies, but if you want to find the unusual specimens of ancient origins, you must go into the woods. Not just any group of trees will do. Nobbin habitat is found by following little trails that are almost unseen.
The spirit creatures do best where there are swamps, lakes, streams, moist woods with ferns and mushrooms, and their favorite tree, the ancient oak. No tree is more important in providing all the essential ingredients for happy nobbins, with it's mighty branches, leaf cover, knot holes and acorn droppings.
If you spot old covered bridges, or bridge structures in the middle of wooded areas, if you hear crows sound a warning, if the fungi is well tended, then you are in prime spirit territory and need to be quiet and approach slowly. That makes winter the best time to uncover secret places. The house and trails are more visible, the nobbins are more apt to be tucked in a warm knot hole and not out traveling, and there are far fewer humans about, so they are less wary.
Now that you know where to look, what should you take? In winter, you can start with warm clothes all layered. A pair of broken in leather boots will serve you well, and a hat to top you off. You can pack your expensive digital camera, but don't expect any shots of nobbins. The crows will shout a warning as you approach, and every critter in the area will be gone before you can point or shoot. It is best to take a sketch pad and a few pencils. They do not trust cameras anyway.
You may want an oil lantern or some candles and matches or flint because the caves will suck you in and it seems that flashlights always have mechanical problems or dead batteries. You think that with the pure daylight of a high pressure system and the blue skies that you will not encounter dark places, but you will. Woods are dark and holes are deep. Take some drink and food, but expect it to disappear before you even get a bite. There are some pranksters in those woods and soon we will meet them.
Now that we know where and how to look, I will come back and show you what I found this past week in my travels through Hob Knobby Hollow.

People have asked me how to locate the mystical realm of fairies and trolls as well as the hundreds of different creatures that live in the Hollow. Since there are such special places everywhere, if you know where to look, I would like to show you how you can locate your own.
First you will be much better off with a trusted troll-sniffing dog. You can never know if you have the right dog until he/she is put to the test, but a good troll sniffer type dog is usually small, black with big ears and extraordinary sniffer capabilities. This is Sugar. She tends to sleep most of the time and beg for food throughout the day, but once she is on the trail, her energy level is amazing. I came by my dog quite by accident as she was a rescue and already 3 years old. As we began our daily walks, she would get a far away look and start going down a barely there trail.
One day I saw tiny footprints of something with only four toes. Next thing I knew, I was introduced into the fantasy world of creatures we call Nobbins. I let them come in my house and drink hot cocoa and eat cupcakes that first winter, and they brought many of their friends. My home was filled with mice and birds, then unicorns and things I never saw before.

Our friendship grew and they trusted me with some secret lore and showed me hidden places. As time went on, I discovered that the world at my doorstep had so many creatures living there that even the residents did not know who lived there or where and most importantly which creatures mean to do harm to us all. They needed a map and so I made them one. Now they need a field guide and this is where we start. So go get a troll-sniffing dog and next I will show you some likely habitat to begin your search.

Big News from Hob Knobby Hollow!

I have been asked to chronicle the mythical creatures that live in Hob Knobby Hollow. A few of my Nobbin friends and I are embarking on an epic mission to discover what lives in the Hollow, where they originated from and how they are doing today. This is not easy as many inhabitants (nobbins), are shape shifters, many have become mixed heritage, and most are not what they originally appear to be.
We will search underground, in caves and tree hollows, in the swamps, and even underwater. Just getting to them can be a huge journey as Hob Knobby Hollow is a vast place. Last year we mapped the Hollow and trod where humans have never been and should never venture. This year we will find out what really lives there and produce a field guide as we travel.

A trip to the Pumpkin Patch

This has been an exciting week here at the Hollow. The pumpkins are just right for picking and making into Jack O Lanterns! Nobbins love this time of year because they get to pick a pumpkin and watch as the older ones carve a face. The inside of the pumpkin glows in the dark which is really exciting for these little guys.

They were supervised by Dimplee the oldest nobbin. Every little nobbin who was good received a bat decal to wear on their tunic, and they were so happy about that!

One little nobbin did not get a bat decoration because she came home with a ghost which was not really appreciated by the others who fear such things. She didn't get a bat for her tunic, but she has a ghost forever friend.

Little baby Bobber fell asleep and was placed in a pumpkin shell. I think next year he will be old enough to really enjoy the hunt.

The Dark Side of Hob knobby Hollow

A beautiful summer day was in full swing. We took our canoe out for a paddle on the clear blue lake. In just one hour a storm blew in and quickly capsized our little boat and sent us on a frightening journey down a water falls and into the dark ravine. We landed with a thud and had to check ourselves for injuries. Luckily, we seemed to be just shook up and scared, but what we saw next was even more frightening than the trip over the falls! Wild hair, fangs, furry, funny things, and just plain scary greeted us on the shore. We found the lost land of Trolls from the Darkside that we had only heard tales about up til now. We searched for a quick way out or our canoe or some way to evade those monster looking tribesmen. Well sometimes things are not as they seem. These were just the nicest group of people. They fed us..not sure what... they told us funny stories, and helped us get back to the lake of Hob Knobby Hollow where the storm was gone like it never even happened.

Finally I have a Chimp!

I have always wanted to own a monkey and today I made me one. His name is Beanie and I'm proud of him. He is a kit monkey that I made the furry body for. I'm rather surprised that things went so smoothly, as I am not a seamstress in any way. I made a pattern for the body and upper limbs, cut them out of black fur, and assembled the already made head and limbs. He is so real looking and always makes me smile. I have no plans to sell this little guy. He wears preemie clothes. He brightens my day. Next I will try an orangutan baby! Hope you are all getting through the winter the best way you can. Spring is so close. I saw bluebirds the other day. Do something that makes you smile, whatever that may be!

Recycle and re use Monkey business

I have recently finished my largest tutorial ever. It has over 70 photos showing step by step how to make the chimp pictured. It is a jointed chimp so can be handled and dressed. For more play value, I include a simple top and britches pattern and a hammock pattern so your baby chimp can relax after all that play. Have a barrel of fun and teach yourself to make this baby and you will have yourself a new friend! A custom cake topper

I had so much fun creating this custom cake topper through etsy. First we discussed that it would be a pirate theme with cute, happy mice. I drew up a little pencil drawing of the basic idea. A couple of mice were made next. I built a boat around them and a treasure chest too. I added a pirate flag and a parrot.

First there was a penguin who walked around a lot. He soon found his true love and he was just besot. It wasn't long before they were ready to tie the knot! She found her favorite lace and trims all frilly and so divine. He discovered that a tie and hat made him feel so fine. And if that wasn't enough to give them happy feet, they found all kinds of flowers that made their look complete. A base to rest their tootsies on had all the words just so, The name and date that they had chosen, will be there wherever they go. When the party was over, they reflected upon how great the day had been. It was their day, done their way, to remember time and time again.

Not long after I met the crazy little Nutty Nobbins scampering through the leaves of the forest, I discovered another little Nobbin. Little creatures of various shapes and wearing acorn caps. They are related to the Nutty Nobbins, but are actually Dew Biddies. I learned that a Dew Biddy will only drink the morning dew. The problem is, we are having a record-breaking dry year here and morning dew is not easily found. That is why I have seen so many little Dew Biddies in their acorn caps, scampering around searching for a missed dew drop, or substituting the occasional foggy mist. Not all dew Biddies are the same. Some have fairy wings, some have mouse tails and ears, some sleep soundly, and some even come out at night with a body that glows. They are all small enough to live in my doll house where I have tried to lure them into drinking coffee, milk, and even beer. They would have none of it. Today is Halloween, yet I'm working on a new tutorial for Christmas and beyond. I am also gathering up supplies for my new family of friends for the Holidays....ELVES of course!

I have invited some silly little nuts to my house. They are usually found in the Hollow when you look closely at the leaves. They scamper away so quickly! I think it would be a shame to waste all those little acorn caps! These little Nutty Nobbins will go out free to my customers who buy my gift boxed Nobbins on eBay or Etsy, for a limited time. (The time being limited until I get tired of making them.)

What is so Special about my Sculptures?

You can look around and find many fairies, chimps, fluffy things and cute things, scary stuff and sculptures of all kinds. I believe every artist should have the freedom to follow their muse. I had fallen in love with reborns and I loved to make and dress them. What if I could make my sculptures like a doll and give them a wardrobe for fun.? We all love to play! So I developed a soft sculpture design that still had the cute baby qualities that I love, but also they are playable. I made a troll that has a removable fairy outfit! It is made of lace with silk flower wings attached. This allowed my little Nobbins to play "fly like a fairy" which is their favorite game. When playtime is over, there is a soft diaper and top so they can go rest in their custom made hammock. The hammock allows the Nobbin to be hung close by, for luck and a smile. I also give them a bottle of magic milk that I hand make, and they have little headbands, dresses, and sometimes a crocheted blanket with hood that my mom makes for me. Below are some of the sculptures that I have sold. I never saw anyone else with the hammock idea, let alone the fairy outfit. My chimps get hammocks too! Coming soon! Nutty Nobbins!

BRIDGE TROLLS!!!!

Well, we knew that one day it would have to happen. I usually follow troll tracks to find trolls, but, so far, I have only met the pleasant and friendly woodland trolls. I have to cross this bridge to get to Hob Knobby Hollow though, and I had heard that bridge trolls have been spotted there in the past. Any bridge that has character and has been around for a very long time is suitable bridge troll habitat. On my last outing, something jumped in my pocket. I looked and saw ..A BRIDGE TROLL!! I quickly tried to eject him from my pocket and was just a quickly bitten!! So that is how this troll came home with me. I next introduced him to my family of happy little trolls and here was their reaction. I learned a few things about these characters since that day. They are solitary in nature due to the fact that they eat a diet of fish and bugs. They don't like competition for food and will defend a good fishing hole. Woodland trolls, on the other hand, eat mushrooms, seeds and an occasional bug. They have food all around them so they eat whenever they want, giving them time to play and socialize. A newborn Bridge troll resembles a newborn Woodland troll except it is a bit larger with big feet and hands. This is a Bridge troll newborn and the differences are hard to spot. Within just a month though, the differences become obvious. A Bridge troll has a tail! He may also start to develop hair on his head and body. So meet my first Bridge troll and I'm sure there will be many more, now that I understand them and they see that I mean them no harm. The bite has been forgotten, and only the charm of discovering these wonderful and resourceful creatures remain. Say hello and give a warm welcome to Gnudgeon! Just don't put your finger near his mouth.

Years ago I saw a man at a flea market sell his little sugar gliders. They would hide out in your pocket and were so cute and expensive! I went home and read about them. They are nocturnal, need a companion to be happy, and a very spacious cage etc etc..... Well, I did not get them and I researched what would be a good and happy little pocket pet. Chinchillas are too big and need a cool environment, my guinea pigs were too big and never really friendly, a rat is supposed to be great, but I've never tried one..because I may get thrown out of the house on that one and my rabbits didn't show me much love. So the idea smoldered in my little brain..pocket pets. I made some clay animals and glued fur on them. Mostly they are cute but rather untouchable, being all clay, and unmovable. I spent the last two weeks cutting fabric, making patterns, and developing a technique for my own original pocket pets and I have two that are ready for ebay. I have four more in development, and so many more that are in my head waiting to greet the world. They are soft-bodied, movable and almost indestructible. An older child that takes care of his/her things could have a great collection of these. In the future, I might even make a pocket for them to live in.

New year New projects

I guess I'm like many artists who need to venture out of thier comfort zone and into the unknown every so often. I have made teddy bears before and dolls of fabric too, but this year I am starting my soft sculpture adventure. I would love to make great teddy bears and other animals as well. I want them to be jointed, cute and soft. I want them to be about 5" and in the same style as my polymer clay critters. I've ordered the books and have some fabric.. what am I waiting for? Maybe some courage. I joined the teddy bear group that you see on my sidebar and found some world class. and amazing artists there who are so friendly and nice. If you think you may like to join, I encourage you to try it! Last year I delved into the world of the reborn doll, you may recall, and I really enjoyed doing it..up to a point. I met some fantastic doll artists there and they were very helpful. They were more than happy to answer questions and I even took an online course. I have two reborn babies that I will sell soon on eBay. I must admit that they are a bit hard to part with and there is one that I must keep! Living and learning is what it is all about. I can't wait to show you my teddy bear art whenever I get to making it and I promise that I'll show it even if it is not ...shall we say worthy of a spot on a collector's shelf?

Rabbits are asking me to plant carrots, a rare baby dragon was just born, spring lambs, fairies, and even an angel or two have been spotted. What is a Panda doing in Indiana? Spring is already full of surprises, so enjoy the chorus of peepers and watch the world awaken-a much need reprieve from a winter that never wanted to let go!

The book is made of polymer clay with "The Real Mother Goose" graphics on the cover. It doesn't really open, but is made to look antique and can be worn as a pendant. The goose is made of a stone hard clay so she is not fragile. Her fur looks like feathers and can be brushed. All of her clothes and glasses can be removed. My Fuzzy What-itz are learning office skills!

I have never been very proficient with typing or blogging for that matter, but my fuzzy guys are learning fast. They started out as office buddies, always ready to shoot you a smile to brighten those long days of slow connections and pop-up woes. They have since learned some very helpful skills around the desk. Here they can be seen chasing my mouse. They tried writing notes on the pad, but quickly learned that email was easier and much faster. My cell phone was their next great discovery. It kept them occupied for hours as they called random numbers until they connected to some one's voice. Trouble was, they spoke in garbled tongue and no one could understand them. That has all been corrected now since they learned about text messaging. Soon I began to think of other chores they could help with. I tried to get them to do dishes, but they do not like water so that was a failure. I will have to think some more.

Something New!! Fuzzy What-itz

You may have been wondering, (or maybe you haven't) how a troll that lives outside can tolerate these cold temperatures. They do not wear many clothes, and although some live in here with me, most are out in the woods of Hob Knobby Hollow. The pictures below should help explain how they do it. And thus I learned all about Fuzzy What-itz. They are furry little creatures that live in the knobby knot holes in trees. A bunch of fuzzy butz trolls and Nakey butz trolls will pile together in a hollow tree with the What-itz and tell stories and sing songs. They are warm and happy. You may wonder what they eat. Well they share nuts with the squirrels, but some of the older trolls will go out at night and raid the sunflower seeds from the bird feeders all about town. I'm only too happy to feed them as well as my feathered friends. These guys will soon be found in my etsy shop.

The Gingerbread House Saga

I'm always glad to put away my Holiday decorations so I can get back to my crafting. I had lots of troll help until it came time to throw away the gingerbread house. What an uproar was heard as I held the little house over the garbage can!" Whats wrong my trollish friends?" I asked, as they looked at me so sad. "We want to have that house for our very own to live in" they replied. I never heard of such a thing, but then I'm only human and not nearly small enough to consider such a dwelling. We don't have a door that really opens so if you want to live here we will have to renovate, I explained. The little guys just looked at each other and out the door they went. Out into the cold and snowy day they ran as they left me to ponder "was it something I said?" So I sat there all alone and I thought about how much fun we had building that little house. Everyone had a great time with the candy and frosting. Little PeaPot added gumdrops to the roof. I began to wonder if my little friends were ever coming back. Then the door opened and they had a surprise. A wren came in with them. " Is this little wren going to live here too?" I questioned them? We just asked him to "wren ovate" the house they said. A wren is very skilled at making doorways and building homes after all. And sure enough, the little wren had opened up the doorway in record time. He ate the door in payment for his work. No sooner had he finished, and before the crumbs were even cleared, all the trolls headed for the doorway. They love the little gingerbread house more than any gift they could receive. They can all climb in there and stay warm and safe.

PINEY FEEDS THE FISH

It was all my fault really, the sad events that occurred that day. I was just feeding my fish and I was in a hurry. I felt these eyes on me, and there was Piney watching me, and wanting to help. He was fascinated with my aquarium. I left the room and came back to find Piney had made a huge mess with the food. I swept it up real fast and told Piney to go find someone to play with, as I had things to do. I heard a strange and muffled noise that I just had to follow. I caught a movement in the corner of my eye and my heart sank, and so did Piney. To the bottom of my fish tank he went. Such a desperate look, such a sinking feeling.Piney just wanted to feed my fish and now was drowning. I netted him out as quickly as I could! Things did not look good. I ran outside and hollered PINEY"S DEAD! I Killed Him! All the friends in the area gathered around. Out of the blue, little Hermie started CPR on Piney. I tried to help by lending a hand (or finger) in this case. Just a little press on his chest. Piney has fully re cooperated with his hot cocoa and lots of love. We feel very blessed to have him with us still, and I will always pay more attention to my troll and fairy friends, no matter how busy I am!

I'm so happy that I found a way to keep my little guys busy (for a while anyway). I found some vintage Ouija boards that keep the Fuzzy Butz busy and I gave a blank journal and pencil to the Nakey Butz group. They are enjoying the pictures they have created.

Aren't giveaways fun? I decided to give one little sculpture away every month to an unsuspecting customer. I choose a date by picking a number from a bag and mark that secret date on my calendar. The first person who buys something after the clock strikes 12 for that date gets a freebee in their box! Little Dumplin who is sitting in the pan is this month's freebee. He is going with Flo Ma who is shown with a knife because she is carving a pumpkin. She isn't going to cook and eat little Dumplin!! No Way!!

This last tin house was found at a large outdoor antique show. I have never bargained for anything before, always paying the asking price. However, I heard everyone saying "how much would you take for this" so I gave it a try. They took off $5.00 and the price was $22.00. It has the Disney room and garage that make it even more special. There are plenty more that I would like to collect-but I have run out of room!

My next find came from an Antique store. I just loved this pressed board house. One shop had the same house for$75.00, but this one was $28.00. I have started remoldeling the kitchen. I use mat board so that I'm not changing the vintage house's original paint.

A trip to Goodwill

I didn't go to Goodwill looking for anything in particular, but two children were playing with this dollhouse that sat on the floor. After they left, I looked at the price tag..only $25.00. Who could resist that bargain? My daughter helped me lug it out to the van. It is handmade of plywood and pressed board. I have already repainted it at this point. Many of the furniture pieces are just blocks of wood that came with the house, although I can appreciate the time and effort that went into this house and furniture!

My bargain shopping didn't end here! I'll be posting more on this subject later. Now it is time to beat the heat and go swimming!!

I'm strongly attracted to all things mini and dollhouses. It took a huge effort to pack away my craft supplies and make room for my new passion which is vintage dollhouses. The discovery is part of the fun. I bought this bakery at an auction over a year ago. I bid $1.00 and it was mine. It didn't look like this though. It was very dusty and most of the bakery items were eaten away. I either bought or made more food.

The little tin dollhouse is missing a partition, chimney and ceiling, but it was only $10.00 at a flea market. I will probably make it into a stable.

I finished him today. I will make a few more and then decide where to try to sell them. I know that nearly everyone wanted a monkey when they were young, but I was relentless! Back then you could mail order one, which is a bad thing of course, but I would drool over my list of monkey choices and act like I would really get one.

I guess I thought that a monkey was a baby doll come to life. I'm sure that my mom is laughing and nodding her head over this post. I was really persistant. I did, however get a live hamster. At least they are furry... and they bite...and get lost in the walls.

It looks like spring around here even though today is quite chilly. Our tree looks great this year. When the days get warmer I feel the urge to clean out all the things I anticipated using, that I did not use, and all the treasures that gather dust and take up valuable space. Along these lines I found so many items that I made this past, and so many supplies that I just don't use anymore. This is all leading up to my April Sale. Before the postage rates go up in May, I'm having a Sale. It will be called the TEN DOLLAR SALE at my etsy store. I will get started Monday. It will include the items from my other etsy shop as well as sculptures that have minor flaws or that I just never listed. I will add to it throughout the month of April. I probably won't be doing too many new sculpts this month. More about this later. Enjoy your Spring!!

My eBay Experiment

As promised, I experimented with e Bay because I wanted to know if that would be a good place for me to try to sell my little guys. Here are the results. In a time span of two weeks I took a total of 18 items from my shop that I would sell for about $20.00 each. I used a variety of items-trolls, dragons, monkeys and aliens.I put them on ebay for about half price. That is $360.00 worth of product going on ebay for $180.00 I sold only 10 of the 18 items for either the asking bid or a bit higher. I made a total of $118.12. Ebay fees were $37.03 which left me with $80.97. Pay pal takes their cut also, but I won't include that because they take it from etsy also. I made about $8.00 per item. Not very uplifting. I need to try something else so if any reader has a place that works for them, I would sure like you to post a comment about it. Thank you. I'm going to keep making my monkey and oragutans because I like making them!

Christi Friesen is a polymer clay artist that has inspired me for years. She is loved by so many people -from children to new clayers of all ages as well as long time clayers like myself. It isn't hard to understand why. Her jewelry and sculptures are magic. They have the right combination of art and whimsy, they are simple yet complex.

All her beautiful work doesn't fully explain her popularity however. She generously helps others to learn her art. She has a series of very affordable little books, she has an extensive list of online classes, and she travels everywhere!!

I think my own connection with Christi is for the joy of creating. Normally I make little sculptures. I will sit at my table and fuss with the clay, poke and prod it, and yes sometimes a little cussing helps, until I have something my critical eye halfway likes. It can be very draining. That is when I need a little Christi infusion. I need to play and enjoy myself, do something silly, have fun. That is what she has taught me.

I loved making my little sculptures, but one problem always nagged me. A sculpture is not movable and can break if you dress it. I wanted to make a movable sculpture. I experimented for weeks. I made different attachment points, wire sizes, tried different paints, added hair, tried soft bodies and hard bodies, made clothes, and literally drove myself nuts-er. In the process, I found myself falling in love with realistic baby dolls. I am going to teach myself to reborn dolls. That is a process where you take a doll, paint the skin realistically and add hand rooted hair and lashes. The doll is then weighted and dressed to look and feel like a real baby. So now you will see my babies, both human and troll, will have movable bodies, and clothes. I will have as much fun playing with these new babies as my customers will. Below is a sample of my work (play) progression!
